What is Engagement?

Like outreach, engagement is reaching out to a broad population to get them to an event. But engagement takes outreach one step further. Engagement works on a more individual and personal level; getting a person to come to an event, like what they see, start to feel connected to the community and then eventually wanting to get involved in planning events themselves, based on their own interests. It's getting Jewish students to connect with other Jewish students through their similar interests, and then empowering them to not only come to Jewish events, but to actually incorporate their Jewish identity into the rest of their lives and mentalities as college students. Successful engagement work ideally has a snowball effect. Through tabling on campus, eating meals with students, and having one-on-ones like coffee dates, you will form wonderful, unique relationships with your students. Often these students will provide access to more students around campus by giving you the names of their friends or simply bringing them along to events. You will then be able to figure out what is really important to your students and what they want out of Jewish life on campus.
