The Jewish Campus Service Corps is truly a family and community. As our task as Fellows is sometimes inexplicable to the average American, the Corps is your lifeline to brainstorm, vent, ask for help, and give support. There are two major avenues built into the JCSC program that are extremely helpful throughout the year. The first is the JCSC team system. The Fellows are (as of now) broken into regional groups of about 10 to have monthly conference calls with a JCSC coordinator, as well as to help plan aspects of International Hillel events, and depending on where you are working in the country, actually plan joint events for your students, such as Alternative Spring Breaks!
The other great resource is the JCSC listserve. You will definitely be bombarded with 5-30 emails a day from your fellow Fellows, which can get excessive at times, but so many incredible program ideas and other issues have been bounced around over the year. Because we are spread out through 100 different campuses, the listserve is the central way to get to know your colleagues and get inspiration for new ideas to try at your Hillel. Throughout the year, you may be asked to serve on different task-forces and work groups, such as putting together the different aspects of the JCSC Shabbaton, and these are also great opportunities to work with the other fabulous Fellows and other Hillel professionals.
SENIOR FELLOWS
This year, there were 18 Senior Fellows. We became a very tight group at times during the year. Some people choose to stay another year as a JCSC because they want to make a career in Hillel, some stay because they feel they have more work to do on their campuses before their mission is complete, and some stay because they are unsure of what to do next! Senior Fellows have many added responsibilities and priveleges. At Leaders Assembly, every Senior Fellow gives a D'var Torah to the group, leads workshops, and we have daily breakfasts with special guests like Yitz and Blu Greenberg and Elliot Dorff. We also serve as another resource for the first year Fellows, helping with program ideas and being a good listener for the frustrations of the job.
