Supervision

Supervision is an aspect of the Fellowship that can make or break your experience. Last year, Marla was my supervisor, and this year, Hila has been my supervisor. You will have meetings with your supervisor once every week or two, depending on where you are in the cycle of the year and what programs you have on your plate. The best ingredients for a successful relationship with your supervisor are openness, honesty, letting your guard down, and being receptive to constructive criticism. In our office, I can honestly say every staff member gives and receives feedback constantly, which not only makes us close-knit, but gives us a sense of trust and respect for each other and the work that each of us do.

I also find it important to find mentors in the Hillel field outside your immediate office.  Sometimes, a little more distance can give you a more objective perspective on your programs and issues.  Additionally, it is wonderful to create a support system for yourself all over the country.  I am close with several International Center staff as well as my Hillel staff from when I was a student.  Having friends and mentors through the Hillel community also makes conferences so much fun!
